Exclusive – Gallacher: Settled Scotland side key to Euro 2016 qualification

first_imgFormer Scotland international Kevin Gallacher believes the Tartan Army’s recent form is down to picking a consistent starting eleven throughout their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign.Gordon Strachan’s men lie level on points with Germany and the Republic of Ireland in Group D following their 1-0 win over the latter last night.Shaun Maloney’s memorable strike brought the Scots back into contention for qualification with a top three place in the group now a real possibility. And Gallacher believes that Strachan’s squad consistency has been crucial to Scotland’s recent form.“Gordon has stuck with a tried and tested team and he hasn’t really changed the team much,” he told the Weekend Sports Breakfast show. “Look at the starting eleven, most of them have started the campaign. There may have been a couple of suspensions here and there, but it is a settled side now.“That’s why they are playing so well together, they know each other’s jobs, are helping each other out and carving out results.”The former Scotland forward has warned excitable fans not to get carried away though as it is still a very ‘tight group’.“It’s down to Scotland and Ireland to battle it out for that third place now. You never know, Poland might falter and the Germans might slip up again, but that’s what we have to rely on,” he added.Looking ahead to the keenly anticipated friendly against England on Tuesday night, the former Tartan army star admitted he was keen to grab the bragging rights for once.“Hopefully England, and Scotland, bring a strong side,” he continued. “Both nations have wanted this for a while now. We had it last year and got entertained with goals so, why not again? Scotland v England is a great game.“There is a lot of banter, especially when you are living down here. You are get battered from pillar to post with stick, it’s time to give it out again. So, hopefully Scotland can get the result.”last_img read more
