Uche Ofodile, Lone Star Cell/MTN CEOLonestar Cell MTN has, over the last 3 weeks (June 1 – 21), celebrated its annual employee volunteerism campaign – 21 Days of Y’ello Care. This year’s campaign included workshops and a career fair geared towards providing young people with key skills necessary for entry into the work place, as well as highlighting the impact ICT has on the future of work for young people.In partnership with the Monrovia Consolidated School System (MCSS) and the Booker Washington Institute (BWI), the company hosted two workshops – “Employment Readiness” and “Preparing for an ICT Future” targeting young people in Monrovia and Kakata.A total of 200 students learned how to search for the right job to match their skill level; update their CVs and write winning cover letters.In addition, students were given tips on how to bring forth their best during interviews – including the right dress code, mannerisms and general questions to ask.Students were also guided on developing careers in ICT – what to expect, what qualifications are needed and the importance of ICT in the telecommunications industry.On June 21st the campaign climaxed with the MTN Y’ello Career Fair, which aimed to highlight and provide insight into what the world of work and employment will look like in a digital future.The Career Fair was a first of its kind across the MTN Group of companies, with all 23 Operating Companies (OPCOs) hosting one each in their respective environments, making the MTN Career Fair the largest ever.The event, held at the University of Liberia Fendell Campus, gave 150 students, across all disciplines, an opportunity to hear how Bridge International Academies is making waves in the Education sector with their innovative approach to education.The guest speaker – Hon Maria Nagbe-Harrison, Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) – reminded the audience that technology changes daily and encouraged them to be flexible and adaptable as they prepare for the future.Laureine Guilao, Deputy CEO & Head of Corporate Affairs, said, “21 Days of Y’ello Care is our way giving back. Construction work is moving apace on the new ‘E’ Division (Linden- Kwakwani) Headquarters’ modern facility, located at Mackenzie, Linden, Region 10 (Upper Demerara- Berbice).The building, which is being reconstructed inside the compound of the Mackenzie Police Station, is just about 50 percent complete.Work had commenced last December, after the former structure was demolished to facilitate reconstruction of a more modern policing facility, equipped with all modern amenities. This was made possible through a more-than-$80 million loanThe new ‘E’ Division Police Headquarters under constructionfrom the Government of Guyana, through the Inter- American Development Bank (IDB).According to ‘E’ Division Commander Fazil Karimbaksh, the project is expected to take up to 5 months to be completed. The larger, two-storeyed facility which is being constructed will measure 135 feet by 45 feet.Commander Karimbaksh has said he is satisfied with the work which has so far been completed. “The work is going according to schedule. I would say it’s about 50 percent complete. They’re doing the departments, then they will put the upper flat and the roof… They’re moving apace…We hope it is completed on time, according to schedule,” he noted.The Commander had previously stated that the modern facility, when completed, would bring about an ease in the state of affairs at the station, as he pointed out that the previous facility was inadequately spaced, and as a result, various departments were not established due to the lack of space at the Police Station. Karimbaksh, however, noted that this issue is expected to be solved when the new building comes on stream.“It will greatly assist us, because (in) the previous building we were cramped for space, and a lot of our departments we had to decentralize them to other stations. So, we’re very appreciative of this new building that’s going to come on stream, and it will house all our departments. So the people of Region 10 in particular will have better service, and we will be operating at our full capacity in terms of our departments. It will be more comfortable, too”, Karimbaksh had said.Presently the Police department is operating out of make shift offices within its compound, in an effort to facilitate the reconstruction process.
