Google Open Sources Two Projects, Contributes to Eclipse Foundation

first_imgA Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Back in August, Google acquired Instantiations, the maker of a suite of Java development tools for Google Web Toolkit (GWT). And in September, Google rebranded and relaunched those tools and made the Java Eclipse available for free as part of the GWT. That move has been well-received, and as a result Google announced today that it is open sourcing two of the projects through the Eclipse Foundation.Google is donating the source code and the IP for WindowBuilder, the leading Eclipse Java GUI Designer, and CodePro Profiler, an analytics tool that identifies code performance issues. Specifically, the donation includes the WindowBuilder Engine and designers for SWT and Swing – code and IP that Google says is valued at more than $5 million. The Eclipse Foundation calls this “this is clearly a significant new project announcement, and very good news for Java developers using Eclipse.” According to Ian Skerreitt, the foundation’s director of marketing, Java is its most popular IDE, with over 65% of those working with Eclipse being Java developers.Today’s announcement is good news for those Java developers, following what seems to be a long string of not-so-goodnews in terms of open source and Java. For its part, Google says that it hopes that today’s move will help grow the open source community around Eclipse. It will also provide the opportunity for other companies to offer enterprise support around the products, something that Google hasn’t focused on. How 5 Big Companies Are Marking Data Privacy Day

first_imgmarshall kirkpatrick Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Today is global Data Privacy Day and companies all around the world are marking it in different ways. Below we’ve highlighted some of the activities of Microsoft, Google, Facebook, Opera and IBM.Those actions range from implementing new technologies through making blog posts highlighting existing policies. Do you feel like these companies are responsive to your concerns about data privacy in 2011? Microsoft put up a blog post highlighting its strong security measures baked into Hotmail and Windows Live. That’s nice.European mobile mega-browser company Opera posted the results of an interesting survey it commissioned regarding digital privacy concerns around the world. One highlight:Worried about who is watching you online? Some 38% of Russian respondents were most concerned about social-networking websites having too much insight into their online behavior, far ahead of 15% in the United States and 10% in Japan, where social media ranked number 2. U.S. participants were most concerned about the government (35%). Japan held least trust in shopping sites (33%), while only 5% and 6% respectively in Russia and United States shared the same anxiety. Between 13 and 19% of respondents in each country were not worried about anyone gaining insight into their online activities.Facebook implemented HTTPS secure connections so that users don’t get hijacked by Firesheep and other such programs. The company also faced widespread criticism on privacy, again, now for this week’s move to allow advertisers to sponsor particular status updates from users.Google is hosting a public hearing in Washington DC called “The Technology of Privacy: When Geeks Meet Wonks.” A video of that hearing will be posted on the Google Privacy channel on YouTube. Alma Whitten, Google’s Director of Privacy, Product and Engineering, is clearly committed to balancing peoples’ privacy interests with the interests in innovation held by Google and its users. My favorite big company move is probably IBM’s running of a column on the topic on its Smarter Planet blog. Harriet Pearson, VP Security Counsel & Chief Privacy Officer at IBM, focuses on the Internet of Things and the importance of securing trust through privacy in order to build sustainable technology that can change the world. What’s at stake? Plenty. Getting data privacy “right” is an economic and social imperative. Trust and confidence in the security and privacy of the critical systems of our planet – especially the digital version of its central nervous system, the Internet – is foundational to individuals’ continued engagement and reliance on such things as online commerce, e-health and smart grids. If individual consumers don’t feel that their privacy and security are protected, they will not support modernization efforts, even though the capabilities of technology advancements are proven and the potential benefits to society are extensive. What’s at the forefront of your mind about digital privacy, here on this Digital Privacy Day?Disclosure: IBM is also a ReadWriteWeb sponsor. Van Jones Joins the Obama Administration

first_imgEnvironmental Activist Gets a White House JobWASHINGTON, D.C. — Author and activist Van Jones has a new job as President Barack Obama’s adviser on green jobs and energy initiatives. Jones, a strong advocate for environmental justice, is the founder of Green For All, an Oakland, California, organization that works to create green jobs in impoverished neighborhoods. Jones is also the author of the 2008 bestseller The Green Collar Economy.Jones will be joining the White House Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ). Nancy Sutley, CEQ chair, said, “Van Jones has been a strong voice for green jobs, and we look forward to having him work with departments and agencies to advance the president’s agenda of creating 21st-century jobs that improve energy efficiency and utilize renewable resources.”According to a statement issued by Green for All, Jones’ White House job will involve “helping to shape and implement job-generating climate policy; working to ensure equal protection and equal opportunity in the administration’s climate and energy proposals; and publicly advocating the administration’s environmental and energy agenda.”A handyman, not a czarIn an interview with Michael Burnham of Greenwire, Jones rejected the suggestion that he will become Obama’s “green jobs czar.” Jones said, “I’m the green-jobs handyman. I’m there to serve. I’m there to help as a leader in the field of green jobs, which is a new field. I’m happy to come and serve and be helpful, but there’s no such thing as a green-jobs ‘czar.’ ”In his conversation with Jones, Burnham noted, “A Rutgers University report . . . suggests that most green job openings will not be new occupations, but rather traditional occupations with a new layer of ‘green’ skills and credentials; for example, laborers and building contractors who need specialized training and certification to perform home-weatherization audits.” Jones responded, “That’s one of the exciting things about this. Sometimes people think we’re talking about some exotic occupation from Mars that nobody’s ever heard of; that we’re talking about George Jetson or Buck Rogers when we’re thinking about green jobs. We’re not talking about solar ray guns; we’re talking about caulking guns as one of the major tools we’re going to need to be smarter with energy. Those are jobs our existing workforce, with a little training, can start doing right away.”last_img read more

‘Nitish will attend RJD rally, if invited’

first_imgAmid speculation that the rift between the two ruling alliance partners, the Rashtriya Janata Dal and the Janata Dal (United), is widening, JD(U) leaders on Sunday said Chief Minister and party president Nitish Kumar could attend the RJD’s proposed rally here on August 27. “Our leader Nitish Kumar will be attending the RJD’s anti-BJP rally in his personal capacity, if he is invited”, JD(U) spokesperson Sanjay Singh told journalists after the party’s state executive committee meeting. Mr. Kumar, earlier, had addressed the meeting and appealed to leaders to strengthen the party organisation. Party sources told The Hindu that Mr. Kumar also asked party spokespersons to refrain from making contentious comments. He made it clear that he had no political plans outside the State. “I will remain in Bihar,” he told the executive. Mr. Kumar was emphatic that his party had been following the coalition dharma and would always follow it. “I will continue following my own ideology unmindful of its consequences”, he told the meeting.Earlier, some senior JD(U) leaders had said that the party would not be attending the RJD’s proposed mega rally BJP hatao, Desh bachao. “The rally is being called by the RJD and not by the JD(U)”, said JD(U) leader RCP Singh. Facing dubious land deal charges against his family members and reopening of fodder scam cases in which he is an accused, RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav had called the anti-BJP rally saying all non-BJP party leaders like Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, BSP chief Mayawati and Left party leaders would participate in it. Party sources said Ms. Banerjee, Ms. Mayawati and SP president Akhilesh Yadav have already sent their consent to attend the rally. At the JD(U) meeting, while making oblique reference to the Congress party’s apparent displeasure over his support to NDA’s presidential candidate Ram Nath Kovind, Mr. Kumar reportedly said “the Congress party has been changing its political principles but he would not change his principles whatever be the consequences.” “Hamare neta pichhlaggu nahin, dusare log pichhlaggu honge (Our leader would not be pillion of anybody, others could be)”, Mr. Sanjay Singh later told the media.last_img read more
