Napoli coach Ancelotti delighted for matchwinner Milikby Carlos Volcano10 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveNapoli coach Carlo Ancelotti was pleased with their 1-0 win over Cagliari.Arkadiusz Milik struck late to earn the points for Napoli.“He is a smart guy, who is able to deal with various situations in a balanced manner,” Ancelotti told Sky Sport Italia.“The Liverpool defeat was a heavy blow, but the reaction had already come a long time before this evening. I didn’t need to win at Cagliari to know this team had already shaken off the Anfield game.“This is a team with good prospects and we are doing very well, but in my view can do far better. We are very competitive. We were in the Champions League, we are in Serie A and will be in the Europa League.“I share the project with the club, so this is a structure that doesn’t let itself be influenced by one victory or defeat. Real Madrid convinced Levy faces having to sell Spurs ace Eriksenby Carlos Volcano10 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveReal Madrid are convinced they can prise Christian Eriksen away from Tottenham in 2019.AS says Real management believe the Dane’s decision to suspend new contract talks has handed them an advantage in their battle of wills with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy. With Eriksen’s deal due to expire in 2020, this summer represents the best time for Levy to sell – a situation even manager Mauricio Pochettino recognises is now becoming reality.”Of course he is an important player and as coach you want to have him with you, but in the end it is a negotiation and there are different parties that have different interests, it would be great if he stays here, but, if not, it is in your right to do what you want,” said the Argentine. For their part, Real are prioritising Eriksen as the player to succeed veteran Luka Modric as their prime playmaker. About the authorFreddie TaylorShare the loveHave your say Arsenal players becoming frustrated with stale training sessions under Emeryby Freddie Taylora month agoSend to a friendShare the loveSome Arsenal players are growing increasingly frustrated with Unai Emery’s training methods. The Gunners criminally blew a two-goal lead to draw with Watford last Sunday, with lacklustre defending at fault for both goals.Emery was criticised for his tactics and decision making during the match, which saw Watford accumulate 31 shots. It isn’t only the problem Emery is facing as his players have become increasingly frustrated with his refusal to practice pressing in his training sessions. The Athletic says Emery does not view pressing as an essential tactic to work on in training. This has annoyed some of his players who want to see Emery change up his training methods. The Spaniard is still liked by his playing group, but that could change if the situation continues this season.

Trent Alexander-Arnold feels Liverpool can take inspiration from Manchester City after the champions ended the Reds’ unbeaten start to the Premier League season.Liverpool went down 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium on Thursday, Leroy Sane scoring a second-half winner for Pep Guardiola’s side after Roberto Firmino had cancelled out Sergio Aguero’s opener.City therefore, cut Liverpool’s lead atop the table to four points and, with Tottenham only two points further back, an exciting title race looks to be on the cards. Last season, City’s unbeaten run in the league was ended by Liverpool at Anfield in January, but Guardiola’s men responded by going on to win the title with a record-breaking 100 points. And Alexander-Arnold, who helped set up Firmino’s equaliser on Thursday, feels Liverpool can use the pain of their first league loss of the campaign to drive them on.”Every defeat hurts. But losing to City is really hard because we’ve been on such a long unbeaten run,” the England defender said.”We’ve had a lot of wins this season and we were dreading this moment. In the back of our minds, we knew we would lose a game eventually because football is like that.”But City lost their unbeaten record at Anfield last season – and at the same time of year – and they responded by going on another long run of winning games.”That’s what the top teams do and it’s what we’ve got to do. It’s a chance to win a trophy – and everyone at Liverpool wants to win things. We’re not going there to get knocked out. We want to win. It becomes a habit.”I remember Steven Gerrard’s goal against West Ham [in the 2006 final]. It was a great final and a great day for the club. We’re all trying to get back to those days again – and hopefully that will happen this season.”Liverpool is a great club with a massive history, and the players who are here now must carry that responsibility. Antoine Griezmann continued his goalscoring streak as Atletico Madrid drew 1-1 at Girona to edge them towards the last eight of the Copa del Rey.Diego Simeone’s side have not beaten Girona since they were promoted to LaLiga in 2017, but the visitors looked prime to end that run when Griezmann fortuitously put Atletico into the lead after nine minutes with his seventh goal in eight games. However, the hosts hit back 25 minutes later as Anthony Lozano netted only his second goal of the season on a night when he was a thorn in Atletico’s side. Simeone will fancy his chances of guiding Atletico to a seventh consecutive appearance in the quarter-finals given they are unbeaten at home this season, but Girona will stand a chance in the second leg if they put in the kind of spirited display that saw them fight back to earn a draw. The hosts’ good start turned sour when Griezmann met Nikola Kalinic’s neat pass with a side-footed first-time shot from just inside the box that went in off goalkeeper Gorka Iraizoz.Girona hit back when Aleix Garcia’s clever ball picked out Lozano, who took a touch and stroked a dipping shot towards goal that Antonio Adan could only help into the net with a punch that lacked the strength to push it over the crossbar.Lozano then crashed a header onto the underside of the bar, only to see it bounce back out as Atletico ended the half fortunate to be level.Kalinic missed two chances early in the second half, heading straight at Iraizoz with the first before turning the Girona defence and blazing over the target from 12 yards with the second.Seydou Doumbia had plenty to aim at when the ball fell to him on the edge of the six-yard box but he scuffed his shot in what proved to be Girona’s last clear-cut chance of the evening, leaving them needing to spring a surprise in Madrid next week.93′ | 1-1 | The game ends at Montilivi! David Luiz is not Arsenal’s “answer to their prayers”, says Martin Keown, with an unnecessary gamble being taken on a player who will be “exposed” in a much-criticised defensive unit. The Gunners have sought to build for the future at the heart of their back four by agreeing a deal for William Saliba, but have allowed him to spend the 2019-20 campaign back on loan at Saint-Etienne.Unai Emery is therefore eager to find an experienced addition to his ranks for the current campaign, with Laurent Koscielny having forced through a switch to Bordeaux. Article continues below Editors’ Picks Emery out of jail – for now – as brilliant Pepe papers over Arsenal’s cracks What is Manchester United’s ownership situation and how would Kevin Glazer’s sale of shares affect the club? Ox-rated! Dream night in Genk for Liverpool ace after injury nightmare Messi a man for all Champions League seasons – but will this really be Barcelona’s? Chelsea star Luiz is the man Arsenal have set their sights on, with Goal able to confirm that an £8 million ($10m) agreement is in place, but Keown has questioned the logic of swooping for the 32-year-old Brazil international. The former Gunners centre-half told the Daily Mail: “Yes, Arsenal want a centre back, but is Luiz the answer to their prayers? I don’t think so. “The way the 32-year-old plays, he would be exposed in that Arsenal defence. He would not get the same protection that he enjoys at Chelsea, where N’Golo Kante patrols in front of the back line. “In possession, Luiz is a wonderful passer, but he makes mistakes when playing as part of a back four.“He has a tendency to lose his marker and is one of those all-or-nothing players — if he doesn’t win the ball in a challenge, then congratulations because you’re in. “Luiz is clearly a big personality. Maybe Emery thinks he can control the Brazilian — they crossed paths at Paris Saint-Germain — but him missing first-team training with Chelsea on Wednesday is a red flag. “Let’s not forget that Arsenal have just been forced to sell a player to Bordeaux who did this to them.“Laurent Koscielny was club captain and always came across as a good egg, but he still made sure he got his move. “He refused to take part in their pre-season tour of the United States. That proved how even the most well-balanced player is prepared to rock the boat in a bid to get his way. “Do Arsenal really want to be on the receiving end of someone willing to kick up a similar fuss now? That’s why I question whether he (Luiz) would be suitable for Emery.”If Arsenal do push through a deal for Luiz, and Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney, then it could be that Emery fields a new-look line up in a Premier League opener against Newcastle on Sunday. The Gunners have already broken their transfer record this summer to acquire £72m ($88m) forward Nicolas Pepe, while also taking midfielder Dani Ceballos on loan from Real Madrid and exciting teenager Gabriel Martinelli from Ituano.
Every week, there are a half-dozen questionable targeting calls that lead to ejections in college football. We just saw another in the Ohio State vs. Nebraska contest.Early in the second quarter, with Ohio State leading 16-7, Nebraska quarterback Adrian Martinez attempted to find tight end Kurt Rafdal across the middle. Ohio State safety Jordan Fuller attempted to tackle Rafdal, leading with his shoulder. Rafdal didn’t make the catch and fell to the ground, right as Fuller hit him.Fuller wound up hitting Rafdal in the head/neck area. It was called targeting. Now, Nebraska has released a new statement providing an update. On Thursday evening, the Nebraska athletic department revealed how and when it was informed of the charges Washington is facing. The department revealed that it was first made aware of the situation in September 13, 2018 – more than two years after the event allegedly took place, and several months after the investigation apparently began.According to Nebraska, it was unaware of what the issues concerning Washington were in September. UNLPD did not know the nature of the inquiry. The school revealed that it spoke to an investigator in the matter and ultimately introduced Washington to an attorney. The statement goes on to say that the school was first made aware of the exact nature of the charges on February 8, 2019, when Michael Bott of NBC Bay Area revealed that he would be publishing a story on the issue. Bott revealed to Nebraska that the charges were for felony child pornography and for misdemeanor “revenge porn.”Washington was Nebraska’s third-leading rusher in 2018, rushing for 455 yards on 77 carries and adding another 221 yards receiving. It remains to be seen if the school intends to impose any disciplinary measures on Washington.Stay tuned.[Corn Nation]

LINCOLN, NE – SEPTEMBER 15: Quarterback Adrian Martinez #2 of the Nebraska Cornhuskers warms up before the game against the Troy Trojans at Memorial Stadium on September 15, 2018 in Lincoln, Nebraska. (Photo by Steven Branscombe/Getty Images)Nebraska enters the 2019 season with increased expectations in Year Two under Scott Frost. Quarterback Adrian Martinez is a big reason why.Landing Martinez was viewed as a coup for Frost, who scooped the four-star signal caller up shortly after being hired in December 2017. After enrolling early and earning the starting job as a true freshman, Martinez showed plenty of promise last season. Some pundits were clearly impressed with what they saw. Athlon Sports released its rankings of the 130 starting quarterbacks in college football earlier today.Martinez checks in at No. 9, right behind Big Ten counterparts Justin Fields (Ohio State) and Shea Patterson (Michigan). The continued development of Martinez is a big reason why coach Scott Frost’s team should take a big step forward in 2019. Martinez did not play as a high school senior due to injury but showed no rust in his freshman season. The California native connected on 64.6 percent of his passes for 2,617 yards and 17 touchdowns to just eight picks. Martinez finished second on the team with 629 rushing yards and chipped in eight scores on the ground. With a full offseason to develop under Frost, look for Martinez to contend for All-Big Ten honors this fall.Slotting Martinez in the top 10 seems pretty bold, though he deserves to be ahead of Fields based off their current track records. No matter where you put him nationally, there is no reason why Martinez shouldn’t be one of the best quarterbacks in the Big Ten in 2019.You can view Athlon’s full rankings here.
