first_imgBack pain could be prevented by one workout that you can do at home, according to a medical expert…GP and Embarrassing Bodies presenter Dr Dawn Harper believes that Pilates could help ward off the issue, which the NHS describes as ‘very common’ among the British public.Speaking to the Daily Express, she explained that core strength exercises are a great way to help prevent back pain.Pilates, which aims to strengthen the body in an even way, has a particular focus on core strength to improve general fitness and wellbeing.‘The most common cause [of back pain] is mechanical strain,’ she said. ‘The problem is most of us don’t take much notice of our backs until they go wrong.‘Once someone has strained the muscles in their back, it is often a recurrent problem so I am a huge fan of people doing core strength exercises and taking time to think about their posture. Pilates is great for this.’Dr Harper continued: ‘It really doesn’t have to take a lot of time. I do a 15 minute routine every morning before my shower. There are some great videos online to help too.’‘Back pain that is associated with a fever, numbness or weakness and poor control of bladder or bowels must be seen urgently by a doctor,’ she added.The NHS says that there is ‘some evidence that Pilates can provide pain relief to people with non-specific lower back pain’.Sourcelast_img
